Gaming Hardware Sales – Skylake CPU, 4x 3TB WD Reds, & Corsair PSU
Posted on October 18, 2015
This weekend’s gaming hardware sales sees the return of WD Red hard drives, an Intel i5-6400 Skylake CPU, and a 750W PSU on the cheap. The WD Red drives are of particular interest to use – we actually use three of these in RAID 5 on our render rig, and feel confident in recommending them for RAID users.
4-Pack of 3TB WD Red HDDs ($380): They might not be as exciting as SSDs to a lot of folks, but RAID hard drives provide a massive amount of reliable storage and, depending on configuration, that’s with redundancy. We’d recommend a RAID 10 or RAID 5 setup if using 3-4 WD Red HDDs, depending on your needs. This is a strong starter for media professionals (or those who ‘find’ a lot of media).
Intel i5-6400 6M ($180): With promo code EMCKAKT35 at checkout, Intel’s new Skylake CPU – the non-K 6400 – comes down to $180. An i5-6400 is ideal for builders who have no interest in overclocking; the CPU is locked, but can couple with an H170 or B150 board to greatly reduce overall build cost.
Corsair CX750 ($60): After MIR, Corsair’s 750W CX750 PSU ships at $60, offering 80 Plus Bronze certification. Unfortunately, the power supply isn’t modular (at all), so you’re dealing with cabling hell if working with a smaller chassis. This PSU is something we’d buy if on an odd budget that demands high wattage but a low price – like a replacement PSU, or something of that nature.
That’s all for this weekend. We’ll be back this week with some major reviews and features, following-up with our GTX 980 laptop review.
