A final note from my experience with similar games: East India Company (linked to above) is more comprehensive, has a larger, scaled-back view of things, and more occurrences of naval battles. It depends on what you're after, but EIC makes for a more sophisticated trading game.

For example, the guy in the Netherlands that actually picked up a phone and called my 2v2 partner in Texas (back in the Age of Empires III days) to tell him how he was going to kill him.

I definitely agree on music placement. Totally true, and it's the same with movies.

I think I only found Diablo scary because it was one of the first dungeon-delvers I had ever played, but games like FEAR are top-notch.

Hmmm... I think playing Doom or Left 4 Dead alone will do its job. Playing either with other people nearby, or on the mic, breaks immersion.
